The New Economics Foundation provides a succinct definition of well-being, which encompasses the social, economic, and political factors that shape our experience: “Well-being can be understood as how people feel and how they function, both on a personal and a social level, and how they evaluate their lives as a whole.” 3 One component of this is longevity, which is plainly measured by life expectancy. Well-being and longevity offer evidence that members of entire communities are empowered; these metrics complement median wealth to offer a better economic expression of Black power. Beyond money and individual gains, the impact of a person’s successes is also composed of the value they add to their overall lives and to the communities in which they reside.
